Design guidance

SHLTR is a design-led publication. Advertising that feels editorial, understated, and visually refined performs best. Whether you're supplying finished artwork or starting from scratch, our creative team is happy to advise, refine, or create your advertisement.

Aesthetics

Our readers expect a visually cohesive, editorially considered experience. These guidelines help your ad feel at home in the magazine — and your brand look considered, credible, and beautifully presented. We're always happy to advise.

Think editorial, not promotional

Ads that perform best in SHLTR feel calm, confident, and visually resolved.

We encourage

  • Clear hierarchy and generous white space
  • Strong, singular imagery
  • Minimal, thoughtful copy
  • A restrained, confident tone

We generally avoid

  • Overly busy layouts or multiple competing images
  • Heavy promotional language ("limited time," "call now," etc.)
  • Excessive logos, badges, or CTAs
  • Stock-style imagery or overtly digital effects

Clean and considered

Clean, modern typography is preferred. One primary typeface is ideal; two at most. Avoid decorative or novelty fonts, and allow breathing room — type should not feel compressed.

Architectural, not promotional

High-quality, well-lit photography only, with natural color balance — avoid heavy filters or oversaturation. Imagery should feel architectural, material-driven, and intentional; cropping should respect negative space and composition.

Subtle and considered

Subtle, considered palettes work best. Avoid extreme contrast or fluorescent colors unless intrinsic to the brand. White, off-white, and neutral grounds are always welcome.

Confident, not loud

Logos should be cleanly placed and proportionate — avoid clutter from multiple logos and badges where possible. Placements include one primary advertiser logo only; co-branding requires prior approval and is subject to an additional fee.

Concise and purposeful

Keep copy concise and purposeful — avoid dense blocks of text. Product descriptions should feel informative, not sales-driven. URLs or social handles may be included discreetly.

Print specifications

Exact specs are provided separately per issue. Typical standards include high-resolution files (300 dpi), CMYK color mode, correct bleed and trim margins, and fonts embedded or outlined.

Approval & support

SHLTR reserves final approval of all advertising creative to ensure consistency with the magazine's visual standards. When needed, our art department may suggest refinements — or offer design support — to help your ad integrate seamlessly with the issue.
